In Hawaiian, the word Kumu means teacher, guide, or source of knowledge. We chose the name KumuLink because educators, specialists, support staff, and families all play vital roles in a child's learning journey — and KumuLink was created to strengthen those connections. The word "Link" represents our mission: bringing people, information, and support systems together in one place.
Sophia's mother is an educational assistant, and her mother's closest friends are EAs, teachers, and specialists in the Hawaiʻi DOE. From a young age, she sat at dinner tables listening to educators talk about the weight of their work — the paperwork, the fragmented systems, the feeling that the tools never matched the care they were putting in.
When Sophia entered the workforce supporting a inclusion classroom in the DOE's Executive Office on Early Learning program at Pukalani Elementary, she wasn't just hearing those stories anymore — she was living them.
Macy's perspective comes from the other side of the classroom door — as a parent. Her daughter is a kindergartner in a DOE inclusion classroom, where general education and special education students learn side by side.
If Macy — an engaged, tech-savvy parent — was struggling to stay connected, what was the experience like for the most vulnerable families? That question became a core part of what KumuLink is built to solve.

KumuLink was built by two UH Maui College graduates who know the Hawai‘i DOE from the inside — one as an educator, one as a parent.
Macy brings the parent and technology perspective to KumuLink. As a mother of a kindergartner in a DOE inclusion class, she understands what families need from schools — clear communication, transparency, and trust.
